I’ll show that to you later in this tutorial. You can enable or disable the dock on additional screen. I find it easier specially because I have a three screen setup and moving the mouse to the launcher on the first screen is a bit too much of trouble. This way, I quickly launch the file manager with Super+2. Personally, I keep Firefox at position 1, file manager at 2 and the alternate browser at 3 and so on until number 9. Since it is position-based, you should make sure that you don’t reorder the icons all the time. it appears in front of all the other running application windows. If the application is already running, it is brought to focus, i.e. Using the Super/Window key and a number key will launch the application on that position. But if you are like me, you can save that mouse click with a keyboard shortcut. The dock allows you to launch an application in a single mouse click. Use keyboard shortcut to launch applications quickly Most applications will quit while some applications like Telegram will be minimized to the system tray. You can, of course, quit the application. They’re generally very short, very precise and very jewel-like. But might he rather have discovered in the House a better world, and a better self, than the one he grudgingly calls real?Ĭall 08 to order from the Telegraph for £12.In my twenties I loved the short stories of Jorge Luis Borges. It might be that Piranesi is a figure out of Plato’s allegory of the cave, in a third-rate simulacrum of reality he cannot recognise as such. It shouldn’t spoil anything to say, with C S Lewis’s Digory Kirke, that “It’s all in Plato, all in Plato”. There is indeed much to be spoiled here, but unlike other such mysteries, the final revelation, such as it is, leaves us with deeper mysteries to ponder. Every new revelation comes to us as a surprise, as it comes to him.Ĭlarke has written a book it is hard to review without committing that worst of critical sins, the giving away of spoilers. The cleverness of Clarke’s construction begins with her decision to immerse us, more or less from the start, into Piranesi’s view of his World. But our Piranesi is a prisoner in his labyrinth rather than its designer, and the confusions of his perspective are confusions rather than clever artifice. The Carceri, with their tricks of perspective, their flirtations with the limits of geometrical coherence, are evidently the model for the House. The original Piranesi, the 18th-century Italian printmaker, was the creator of an unsettling series of labyrinthine prison interiors. But whose? And why? If the House is not a metaphor, then is it a physical space or one imagined by a radically altered consciousness? The epigraphs, taken at face value, suggest that Piranesi is trapped in some sort of experiment. Hints pile up, pointing to a mystery that we, aided by Piranesi’s confused memories and baffling journal entries, are to solve. But every now and then, some piece of history rudely intrudes: the Other speaks of a place called “Batter-sea” and brings bottles of multivitamins. If this is supposed to be dream or allegory, the House part of an elaborate symbolic system, it would explain the somewhat arch diction of Piranesi’s journals. In the beginning, the House seems like a space outside history, outside geography, outside of time, a space where the passage of days can only be reckoned according to a calendar Piranesi has devised for himself, where things happen on “the first day of the fifth month in the year the albatross came to the south-western halls”. The natural comparison this time around would be to Mervyn Peake’s Castle Gormenghast, except that the House – somehow both Gothic and Baroque – is presented to us neither as a magical part of our world nor as part of another, fantasy world. He devotes his days within it to understanding its tidal systems, the pattern of the stars in the sky above, entering these facts into journals that he does not entirely understand himself. But Piranesi knows the House from the inside as one for whom there is no outside. The Other sometimes conveys the impression that he understands something about the nature of Piranesi’s reality that Piranesi himself does not. The name Piranesi is given to our narrator by the only other living soul who inhabits, or perhaps sporadically visits, the House, an unsettling figure that Piranesi knows only as “the Other”. He has no memory of a time that he didn’t live in the House. Piranesi is, when we start, the only name we have for our narrator, the inhabitant of a curious House that is also, for all he knows, the World (the upper-case letters are his). Piranesi, despite being a fraction of the length of its predecessor, has something of the earlier book’s ambition, the sense of a world fully imagined and richly evoked, but still only imperfectly grasped by the book’s characters. But far from restricting herself to Austen’s famed two inches of ivory, Clarke devised an alternative history of England and its forgotten traditions of magic, traditions that were revealed to be, like other English things, alternately whimsical and sinister. The voice of the earlier book was ironic, a self-conscious pastiche of Jane Austen at her wryest. These epigraphs could have served well enough to whet the appetite for a further course of the epic and fantastical Regency adventure that she served up in the breathtaking Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (2004). The second is from a certain Laurence Arne-Sayles, who turns out to be a figure from within the fiction we are about to read, declaring himself a scholar of the forgotten, of the “curious gaps between things”. The first of Susanna Clarke’s epigraphs to her mysterious new novel, our first clues to what it might be about, is from a remark of the odious amateur magician Uncle Andrew Ketterley from C S Lewis’s The Magician’s Nephew, declaring himself “the adept, who is doing the experiment. The seismic activity in this area is caused by a variety of factors. In total, there have been 19 quakes, with seven of them occurring in the last month. The red dots are quakes in the last month, and the green dots are those in the last year. This map shows the last year of M=3+ earthquakes in and around the Yellowstone region. While this increase in seismic activity is not cause for concern, it does highlight the fact that seismic hazards are widespread. Nonetheless, the rate of earthquakes increased by a large factor. None of these quakes caused any damage and few were felt. However, 7 of these have occurred in the last month, including a M=3.4 just a few hours ago. Over the last year, this region has only seen 19 M=3+ earthquakes. The most recent of these quakes was a M=3.4 on February 3. This Temblor map shows the last month of M=1+ earthquakes in and around the Yellowstone region. This area is notable for being home to Yellowstone National Park, and Hebgen Lake, the site of a M=7.3 quake in 1959. One of these is where Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming meet. However, there are many other regions in the county in which there is seismic activity, and where large earthquakes can occur. When most people think about earthquakes, they think of California, and more recently, Oklahoma. This quake killed 28 people and resulted in million of dollars worth of damage. Boating, fishing and camping can be enjoyed at Hebgen Lake.Check your hazard rank Hebgen Lake in Montana was the site of a M=7.3 earthquake in 1959. Hebgen has a healthy population of browns, cutthroats and rainbows. Today, Hebgen Lake located about 20 minutes west of West Yellowstone is a popular recreational lake. Here, new geysers erupted, and massive slumping caused large cracks in the ground from which steam emitted. High intensities were observed in the northwest section of Yellowstone National Park. Three of the five reinforced bridges in the epicentral area also sustained significant damage. Highway damage near Hebgen Lake was due to landslides slumping vertically and flowing laterally beneath pavements and bridges, which caused severe cracks and destruction. Roadways were cracked and shifted extensively, and much timber was destroyed. Most small-unit masonry structures and wooden buildings along the major fault scarps survived with little damage when subjected only to vibratory forces. Many summer houses in the Hebgen Lake area were damaged: houses and cabins shifted off their foundations, chimneys fell, and pipelines broke. Madison Canyon Earthquake Area and Visitors Center offers interpretive programs about the 1959 earthquake. Most of the 28 deaths were caused by rockslides that covered the Rock Creek public campground on the Madison River, about 9.5 kilometers below Hebgen Dam. The volume of material that blocked the Madison River below Hebgen Dam has been estimated at 28 - 33 million cubic meters. This slide formed a barrier that blocked the gorge and stopped the flow of the Madison River and, within a few weeks, creating Quake Lake almost 53 meters deep. The most spectacular and disastrous effect of the earthquake was the huge avalanche of rock, soil and trees that cascaded from the steep south wall of the Madison River Canyon. The quake damaged the dam, but not severely. In 1959 an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 occurred along a fault that crosses the Madison River. It was and is a popular vacation and fishing spot, near Yellowstone National Park. Hebgen Lake is a man-made lake, retained by an earth-fill dam. Hebgen Lake has been called the premier stillwater fishing lake in Montana. Hebgen Lake is approximately fifteen miles long and four miles wide. However it can be seen in any mountain region. The Brocken spectre was observed and described by Johann Silberschlag in 1780, and has since been recorded often in literature about the region. The phenomenon can appear on any misty mountainside or cloud bank, or even from an aeroplane, but the frequent fogs and low-altitude accessibility of the Brocken, a peak in the Harz Mountains in Germany, have created a local legend from which the phenomenon draws its name. A Brocken spectre (German Brockengespenst), also called Brocken bow or mountain spectre, is the apparently enormous and magnified shadow of an observer, cast upon the upper surfaces of clouds opposite the sun. The effect is caused by the refraction of visible light. The head of the figure is often surrounded by the glowing halo-like rings of a glory, rings of colored light that appear directly opposite the sun when sunlight is reflected by a cloud of uniformly-sized water droplets. The ghost can appear to move (sometimes suddenly) because of the movement of the cloud layer and variations in density within the cloud. The shadow also falls on water droplets of varying distances from the eye, confusing depth perception. The apparent magnification of size of the shadow is an optical illusion that occurs when the observer judges their shadow on relatively nearby clouds to be at the same distance as faraway land objects seen through gaps in the clouds, or when there are no reference points by which to judge its size. The light projects their shadow through the mist, often in a triangular shape due to perspective. Careful night sky watchers can also encounter this spectre's analog in astronomy, a brightening of zodiacal light opposite the Sun known as the gegenschein.īrocken Spectre appears when the sun shines from behind the observer, who is looking down from a ridge or peak into mist or fog. Also seen from mountain tops and airplanes when looking opposite the Sun, the dramatic apparition is the observer's shadow on clouds or fog, the small droplets of water scattering light back towards the Sun through complex internal reflections. That special geometry suggests this is an example of an atmospheric phenomenon called the Glory or sometimes "the Spectre of the Brocken". A clue to its true identity is offered by the photographer, though, who reports he took the picture from the top of a twenty story building with the rising Sun directly at his back. On the morning of August 11, its monstrous form hovered in the mist above municipal buildings near the town center. The city of Veszprem, Hungary was only briefly haunted by this mysterious spectre. Both parties can work out the complicated details beforehand, see if the agreement works for a period of time, and then move on to a more permanent arrangement once both parties are ready. The entire back and forth process of drafting an MOU can be time-consuming, tedious, and laborious, and only organizations serious about working together would go through the effort required to draft and finalize an MOU.Īdditionally, oftentimes an MOU is a great first step before creating a more serious, legally binding document. MOU’s are also a great way to confirm that both parties involved are serious about the ins and outs of working together. They ensure that both parties are serious about working together However, when using an MOU, both parties can have a safe, clear, and efficient way to negotiate all of the details of their relationship. Miscommunication can easily happen when discussing these issues verbally. Instead of discussing this all in a meeting, an MOU allows both parties to clearly assert what they want from the relationship, what they can provide for the project, and when they expect it all to happen. Sometimes it is much easier to negotiate a relationship if you have a well though-out and outlined list of roles and responsibilities for each party. Without an MOU, organizations may feel uneasy and unsure about what exactly is required from them. However, a Memorandum Of Understanding can help to ensure that both parties adequately meet each other’s expectations, which ultimately helps to prevent disappointment, confusion, and a deterioration of the working relationship.Īdditionally, the process of crafting a Memorandum Of Understanding can help both parties plan ahead and make the necessary arrangements to fulfill their part of the agreement. It is very common for organizations working together in partnership to base their relationship on ambiguous verbal agreements alone. Why Memorandums of Understanding are important They help both parties plan ahead and avoid disappointment However, typical sections in an MOU include a section providing context for the nature of the relationship, roles and responsibilities for each party involved, a timeline, and a place for representatives from each party to sign. The information included in a Memorandum Of Understanding template can vary depending on the nature of the relationship and project. Standard MOU’s are usually no more than 2-3 pages long, and they are not legally binding. What is a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU)?Ī Memorandum Of Understanding is simply a document that outlines a working agreement between two or more parties. TouchScript comes with many examples in TouchScript/Examples folder. Don't forget that you can use Alt + click to simulate a second pointer ( read more more about testing multi-touch gestures). Note how you can drag the object with one touch and scale or rotate it with two touches. Attach another component called Transformer to the cube - this component listens to events from TransformGesture and applies translation, rotation and scaling to the GameObject. Make the cube large enough to be able to touch it with two fingers. To test how built-in Gestures work, create an empty cube in the scene and attach a TransformGesture to it either from Component menu or Add Component button. It is also possible to write your own gestures. TouchScript ships with a few built-in Gestures which you can find in Component/TouchScript/Gestures menu. You can make any GameObject react to touch input - just attach one of the scripts called Gestures to it. Note: to simulate a second pointer you can hold Alt and click anywhere within the Game View. Press Play and click or touch (if your PC supports touch input) the Game View - you will see colored circles, pointer cursors. To test how TouchScript works, create an empty scene and drag two prefabs from TouchScript/Prefabs folder to the scene: TouchManager and Cursors. or clone the repository and use the source ( more info on how to do it).download the latest release from Github,.To use TouchScript in your project you either need to Licensed under MIT license.ĭeveloped by Valentin Simonov. TouchScript makes it easy to test multi-touch gestures without an actual multi-touch device using built-in second touch simulator (activated with Alt + click), TUIOPad on iOS or TUIODroid on Android.TouchScript comes with many examples and is extensively documented.TouchScript manages gestures in transform hierarchy and makes sure that the most relevant gesture will receive touch input.TouchScript allows you to write your own gestures and custom pointer input logic.TouchScript includes common gesture implementations: press, release, tap, long press, flick, pinch/scale/rotate.TouchScript supports many touch input methods starting from smartphones to giant touch surfaces: mouse, Windows 7/8 touch, mobile (iOS, Android, Windows Store/Windows Phone), TUIO.Your touch-related code will be the same everywhere. TouchScript abstracts touch and gesture logic from input methods and platforms. This is where you will need TouchScript - it makes handling complex gesture interactions on any touch surface an effortless job. to have a button with a tap gesture placed on a zoomable window. The hard part is to make these gestures work together, e.g. When working on a project for mobile devices or PCs with touch input you will soon require basic gestures like tap, pan, pinch and zoom - they are not hard to implement manually using Unity API or using a package from Asset Store.
